Benefits of Tongue Cleaning

If you’re reading on our dental blog, you may likely be aware of tongue cleaning. Tongue cleaning, the practice of eliminating bacteria from your tongue using a specially-designed oral appliance, has a few benefits, and you should consider them if you’re on the fence about tongue cleaning.

One of the most well-known outcomes of tongue cleaning is fresher breath. Though there is some argument over whether tongue cleaning makes breath noticeably fresher, every little bit helps, right? Getting rid of odor-causing debris from your tongue will also do a number of other great things for your oral cavity.

By removing the sacks of bacteria sitting on the surface of your tongue, you’ll make your tongue a brighter, pinker color that many people find appealing. And when we compare slimy, green tongues to freshly-scraped tongues, we definitely agree that it’s our preference.

Finally, scraping acids off of your tongue means that your oral cavity will be less susceptible to dental ailments such as cavities and gum disease. Bacteria eat away at the enamel on your pearly whites, and infested pockets of bacteria can destroy your gums. While brushing and/or scraping your tongue in no way replaces toothbrushing and flossing, most things that remove bacteria from the mouth are a win in our book.
